Ellen’s sexuality was subject to endless speculation, and she had tended to avoid discussing it before she came out as a lesbian on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her character, on her self-titled show Ellen, also came out as a lesbian a few weeks later in “The Puppy Episode.”
