In Los Angeles homelessness is unfortunately nothing new, but it doesn’t mean that people still don’t try and make a difference. Elvis Summers decided to change something in his life, so he built a miniature house for a homeless woman who slept in a patch of dirt on his block.
Elvis became friendly with the 60-year-old drifter known as “Smokie” after she regularly passed by his apartment to go through his recycling bin. He often wanted to do something for her, he just didn’t know how. So after he heard a story about an Oakland man who builds mini homes out of discarded materials, he thought this might be the perfect option. He spent a little over $500.00 on building materials and constructed the little structure right outside his apartment in the street. He built it on wheels so Smokie could take it with her when she moved on to her next location. The local cops were even OK with it! They just told him “as long as we move it to a different spot every 72 hours” they supported him.
