In today’s overly cynical world, speaking out to defend somebody’s honor is an act we don’t normally see. Instead of saving someone’s dignity, many choose “not be nosey” and “mind their business”. Personally, this is not the kind of society humans should be okay living in. People consistently misuse their first amendment rights to ridicule others but barely ever share words of kindness.
The media can be blamed for this. Twenty four hour news channels fill our minds with negative news and almost never give time for heart-healthy uplifting content – which of course drives us paranoid and makes us think everyone is just out to get us.
Here is an alternative story that many of you may have not heard of. It’s a story of a waiter named Michael Garcia who politely refused to serve a person because this person had a nasty attitude towards a 5 year old child (Milo Castillo) with Down Syndrome. Affected by this child’s “annoying behavior”, the rude patron said, “Special needs children need to be special somewhere else.”
Flustered by this man’s opinion of the child, Garcia stood up for this child by refusing to serve this man by telling him, ”I’m not going to be able to serve you, sir.”
People that heard of this rushed to the restaurant’s Facebook page to applaud Garcia’s action, the restaurant sided with Garcia as well! The idea here is encourage the notion that you should not allow fear of own personal loss to get in the way of abiding by your morals and ideals; it’s a different story if you think that Garcia was wrong to do what he did – it’s mentality like this we can’t have nice things.
