Stormy weather last week in Atlanta held up some flights, which is a fairly normal occurrence in the US during the summer. What did give people quite a surprise was the fact that one of the place waiting on the runway for takeoff got struck by lightening with such intensity that a passenger on another plane was able to take a video of all of this happening. This video of Flight 67 being struck towards the tail end, you can see the power surge of electricity, which is clearly visible just before its stabilized.
The flight that was bound for Las Vegas, ended up being delayed almost two hours, but not because of the lightening strike, but because of other planes taking off late. Delta spokesperson, Morgan Durrant, explained just how rare this situation is “Aircraft design allows lightening bolts to be safely redirected. Fuselage structure and industrial-grade insulation acts as a super-conductive lightening rod that rechannels lightening around and away from customers and crew and out into the ground via landing gear.”
This amazing occurrence doesn’t happen very often, but it stops to make you think how crazy is it if this were to happen mid-air!
